This book begins with a note which explains that in 1846, the first English translation of Andersen's "Eventyr" was published under the title of Danish Fairy Legends and Tales and it contained fourteen tales. In 1852 a second, enlarged edition was published with forty-five tales. This present edition 'is a verbatim reprint of the fourteen tales of the 1846 edition and of the remaining thirty-one of the second edition of 1852. It may be interesting to note that the second is more rare than the first.' (quote taken directly from the book)

This lovely book is solidly bound in burgundy cloth with a gilt vignette and gilt lettering to the front cover and spine. The boards are in good condition with some rubbing and bumping to the edges, corners and to the head and tail of the spine, a small mark to the rear board and minor sunning to the spine. There are two inscriptions to the front free endpaper, one in pen and the other pencil. The contents are lightly age toned with some intermittent foxing and some browning to the preliminary and end pages. The illustration facing p.255 is loose but sits neatly in place. Overall a good copy of these classic fairy tales.
