Identifying a first edition:
The first edition of The Tale of Mr Tod was published in November 1912, and 25'000 were produced. The second printing was in November 1912, with 10'000 copies produced. The third printing was in October 1913, and 10'000 copies were produced. (Linder, p.414)
An identifying feature of the first two printings is that the year 1912 appears on the title page - both printings are believed to be identical. (Linder, p.414)
Another identifying feature of the first edition is the dedication, which reads 'For William Francis of Ulva - someday.' This should have read 'For Francis William of Ulva - someday' - a mistake which was corrected in later printings.
Description:
This is a first edition, first or second printing, bound in buff cloth with an image of Mr Tod to the front cover. The boards are in good condition overall, with wear to corners and some discolouration/marks as shown in the images provided. The book has evidently been repaired with buff coloured tape to the spine and also internally with white tape to the front and rear joints. The front free endpaper is also missing.
The contents are otherwise complete, lightly age toned with some intermittent foxing and a few handling marks. It features lovely colour plates plus numerous in text illustrations in black and white. There are cracks to the joint in a couple of places but the contents are holding firm.
