Decorative Book Stack - Victorian Women Writers - Bronte/Austen/Gaskell
This carefully curated book stack gathers together a selection of work by some of the best known and most loved Victorian British women writers of the nineteenth-century. All volumes are in good-very good condition and the titles are as follows:
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
This late Victorian deluxe edition by The Gresham Publishing Company features a stunning Arts and Crafts gilt peacock feather design on a maroon leather spine, designed by the renowned late 19th and early 20th century book designer and artist, Talwin Morris. This edition was also illustrated by John H. Bacon and features a biographical introduction by William Keith Leask as well as the Preface by 'Currer Bell' (Charlotte Bronte) which featured in the first edition, published in 1847. Quarter bound in maroon leather with olive green boards. As shown in the images, there is quite a bit of scuffing, bumping and wear to the spine, particularly at the head and tail, and the leather to both the front and rear joints has cracked, with some loss of leather. Despite the external wear, the gilt remains vibrant and bright, making it an extremely attractive addition to any bookshelf. The olive boards have some light soiling and bumping to the corners and edges, but are otherwise in good condition. This book remains solidly bound. Internally there is some sporadic foxing and the pages are age toned. One small pencil mark to the preliminaries but otherwise no inscriptions.
Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell
This volume is in particularly good condition. Published by James Nisbet in 1903, it is bound in burgundy-red cloth and features an attractive gilt design to the front cover and spine. There is only minor wear to the extremities and the contents are clean and bright throughout. Beautifully and prolifically illustrated by H. M. Brock.
Emma by Jane Austen
Red leatherette with gilt lettering to the spine. The gilt has faded slightly to the spine but the boards are otherwise in very good condition with only minor wear to the extremities. The contents are clean and bright throughout.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd: London and E. P. Dutton & Co: New York. This is a July 1915 reprint. Bound in red cloth with gilt decoration and lettering to the spine. The boards are in very good overall condition but there is some superficial discolouration / staining to the front and rear boards. Decorative endpapers with a net ink name written to the front free endpaper. Highly decorative title page - the front flyleaf has been removed. The contents are generally clean and bright throughout with only the odd handling mark.
Adam Bede by George Eliot
Published by Hentry Frowde - this is a 1906 reprint. Bound in red cloth with an attractive gilt decoration to the spine. The boards are in very good overall condition with minor wear to the extremities and a faded strip to the upper rear board. There is a neat ink inscription to the front free endpaper which reads 'Sympathy is the golden key that unlocks the hearts of others.' The contents are lightly age toned but otherwise clean and bright throughout.
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

The boards are in very good overall condition with some light wear to the extremities and minor surface wear to the boards. Decorative front endpapers with a small pencil inscription to the ffep.
