This is a particularly attractive and somewhat scarce set of books. Uniformly bound in the original publisher's green decorative cloth and is in very good condition. The boards are generally clean with some surface scuffing and a few marks, but nothing significant. Each volume has some bumping to the corners and some shelf-wear. The lettering and decoration remains clear and bright with minimal fading. Internally the contents are good. Some volumes have an inscription and most have a pencil mark detailing the price at that time. There is some age toning to the pages, with browning/foxing, predominantly to the endpapers. The page edges are rough. Top edge gilt. 
 
An advertisement to the rear of each volume states the following: 'This edition will be printed on antique paper; each volume will contain a Frontispiece in Photogravure from drawings by T. Tyre Macklin and James Torrance. The cover for the volumes has been designed by Walter Crane. In Twelve Volumes, Crown 8vo.
