Did you know that the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle were first published in this magazine?

The Strand Magazine was a monthly magazine, founded by the British publisher and editor George Newnes in 1890 and first published in January, 1891. It was composed of short stories, illustrations, general interest articles, brain-teasers and many other pieces designed to appeal to the mass market. Many writers contributed to the magazine, including Agatha Christie, Edith Nesbit, Rudyard Kipling, H. G. Wells and of course, Arthur Conan Doyle. The first Sherlock Holmes story, A Scandal in Bohemia, appeared in the July 1891 issue of The Strand and it was very well received, leading to a collection of twelve tales involving Sherlock Holmes.

The magazine was issued monthly and then bound as six-monthly volumes, from January to June and July to December, up until the mid-1930s when the format varied at little.

This listing is for three volumes including:

Volume 15  -  1898

Volume 16  -  1898

Volume 17  -  1899

Half-bound in blue leather, each volume is in good - very good condition and solidly bound. There is some significant surface scuffing to the leather with rubbing and bumping to the edges, corners and to the head and tail of the spines, giving an aged appearance. Volumes 15 + 16 have cracks to the lower front and rear joints and volume 17 to the lower front joint - each volume remains firmly bound. Each volume has gilt lettering over a burgundy title band to the spine with five raised bands decorated in gilt. The contents to all volumes are very good. Endpapers featuring an attractive green/white leaf design. Contents generally clean and bright throughout with some intermittent foxing. *

This set weighs 5.5 kilograms without packaging.
