"When the aristocratic Lady Isabel abandons her husband and children for her wicked seducer, more is at stake than moral retribution. Ellen Wood played upon the anxieties of the Victorian middle classes who feared a breakdown of the social order as divorce became more readily available and promiscuity threatened the sanctity of the family. In her novel the simple act of hiring a governess raises the spectres of murder, disguise, and adultery. Her sensation novel was devoured by readers from the Prince of Wales to Joseph Conrad and continued to fascinate." (Synopsis credit: Goodreads)
Bound in the original publisher's blue pictorial cloth, this book is in very good condition. It has some rubbing and bumping to the corners of the boards, a mark to the front board as shown in the images, and general shelf wear to the extremities. Pictorial endpapers which have some browning but are free from inscriptions. Ink inscription to the reverse of the frontispiece dated 1914. The contents are quite heavily age toned with some intermittent foxing. Illustrated in colour - these pages have more noticeable foxing to the edges as shown in the images provided, though this does not detract from the lovely illustrations.
