"Edmund Dulac’s Picture Book for the French Red Cross is a stunning work, produced in the midst of the First World War, by a true genius of illustration. It was originally published in 1915, and contains twenty colour images. Dulac was a French-born, British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer, who despite his increasing years, wished to help the war effort in any way he could. The drawings are delicately drawn, notable for their classic fairy tale charms and Japanese stylistic influence. The skilfully coloured images further refine the enchantingly simple story telling – all presented together in this text. It is a book to be enjoyed by both young and old; a beautiful object, produced at a time of great peril." - credit to Pook Press for this synopsis. This lovely book comprises fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sinbad the Sailor and Blue Beard. It is bound in yellow cloth which is decorated and lettered in black to the front board with black lettering to the spine. The boards are in very good overall condition - there is some light surface soiling to the boards and some rubbing and bumping to the edges, corners and to the head and tail of the spine, including a superficial crack to the cloth at the upper spine. There is also the number 190 written to the head of the spine. The contents are age toned with some light intermittent foxing which is slightly heavier in places. No inscriptions. Featuring twenty full page illustrations - nineteen in colour and the final one being a black and white picture of Edmund Dulac. Collated complete.
