Our Village is a collection of about 100 literary sketches of rural life written by Mary Russell Mitford (1787–1855), and originally published during the 1820s and 1830s. The series first appeared in The Lady's Magazine. The full title is: Our Village: Sketches of Rural Character and Scenery. The vivid series was based upon life in Three Mile Cross, a hamlet in the parish of Shinfield (south-east of Reading in Berkshire), where she lived.
Bound in the original publisher's dark green decorative cloth with an elaborate gilt decoration to the front cover and spine. The boards are in good condition with minor bumping to the extremities. There is a tiny nick to the cloth a the rear joint - see photograph. All edges gilt which remains vibrant and bright. Dark green endpapers - there is a superficial crack to the endpaper at the front joint. Ink inscription to the half title page dated 1898. The contents are lightly age toned with some light - moderate intermittent foxing.
