A note about the vignette title page variants:
There are four variants of the vignette title page:
- Variant 1 has simply printed "A Love Story." text with no embellishments.
- Variant 2, second state, has "A Love Story" printed in letters in a banner/scroll.
- Variant 3, third state, has the "A Love Story" text printed more elaborately with the banner/scroll being carried by an angel/cupid. The imprint is in one line with no date.
- Variant 4, fourth state, has the same design as the third state but is lacking the imprint.
Condition:Bound in the original publisher's full red cloth binding with blind tooling and gilt lettering to the front cover and spine. The boards are a little dulled/discoloured with some rubbing and bumping to the corners and to the head and tail of the spine. Endpapers free from inscriptions. There is a crack to the inner front hinge but the book remains secure. The contents are age toned but otherwise very good.
The Battle of Life: A Love Story is a novella by Charles Dickens. It is the fourth of his five "Christmas Books", coming after The Cricket on the Hearth, followed by The Haunted Man & the Ghost's Bargain.
