This is a stunning edition of The Select Works of John Bunyan, containing The Pilgrim's Progress and The Holy War, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. The Jerusalem Sinner Saved, Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ, The Saints' Privilege and Profit, The Water of Life, and the Barren Fig-Tree. With a life of the author by George Cheever and an introductory essay on The Pilgrim's Progress by James Montgomery. Beautifully illustrated with one hundred engravings on wood and a series of drawings in chromo-lithography after designs by T. Stothard. Published in 1864 by William Collins, Queen's Printer: Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. This is a large and impressive leather book, 4to, external dimensions 29cm x 33.5cm. Bound in brown leather with a lovely gilt design to the front and back boards. The binding is solid - the boards with some scuffing and bumping to the surfaces, and to the edges, corners and head and tail of the spine. Five raised bands to the spine with gilt decoration to the panels and gilt lettering. Superficial crack to front hinge. Plain cream endpapers. Owners name in ink to front flyleaf - dated 1865. Half title page. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Title page with decorative border. Second title page + lxiv + 775pp. Contents very good. The pages are age toned with darker edges, small tear to tail edge of preliminary page, a few handling/other marks to some pages. Beautifully illustrated. Overall a very handsome book which remains in very good condition.
